Haiti voters on the election
Country profile: Haiti
Twelve of the 18 candidates running in the presidential election that is currently under way in Haiti have called for the vote to be cancelled.

Front runner for the opposition Mirlande Manigat said the polls were fraudulent.

She said ballot boxes had been stuffed with votes even before polls opened.

The other candidates also accused President Rene Preval of favouring the candidate running for his Unity Party, Jude Celestin.

They endorsed a joint statement calling on their supporters supporters to show their anger with demonstrations against the government.

BBC News, Port-au-Prince
This election is taking place in extremely testing conditions.

The country had a massive earthquake in January which destroyed most government buildings.

Many people lost everything, including their voting cards.

And now there is a cholera epidemic, which has made some people scared to leave their homes.

But none of the Haitians I have spoken to on this election day blame these factors for the election irregularities.

People who could not find their names on voters' lists accused the government of cheating them out of their right to vote.

Haitians prepare for an 'election of halves'
The polls are the first since a devastating earthquake struck in January, killing 230,000 people.

Some 11,000 United Nations peacekeepers are helping provide security and logistical support to the process in a country where infrastructure is poor and many earthquake victims still live in tented camps, mostly in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Occasional violence had broken out during generally colourful and peaceful campaigns.

At least one person was killed and several wounded when gunmen opened fire at a rally for musician-turned-politician Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly late on Friday. Two others were shot dead earlier in the week in Beaumont, in south-western Haiti.

Some candidates, including Ms Manigat and Mr Martelly, had already voiced their concerns about the possibility of vote-rigging ahead of Sunday's poll.

Voting started at 0600 local time (1100 GMT) and is due to end at 1600 (2100 GMT).

Results are due to come in from 5 December onwards, with the final tally to be announced on 20 December.

The word "philately" is the English version of the French word "philatélie", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864.[2]

Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the last six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than timbromanie which was disliked.[3] He took the Greek root word phil or philo, meaning an attraction or affinity for something, and ateleia, meaning "exempt from duties and taxes" to form "philatelie".[4] The introduction of postage stamps meant that the receipt of letters was now free of charge, whereas before stamps it was normal for postal charges to be paid by the recipient of a letter.

The alternative terms "timbromania", "timbrophily" and "timbrology" gradually fell out of use as philately gained acceptance during the 1860s.[UK Vouchers
